“I have never let my schooling interfere with my education.” – Mark Twain
Professional Developmentis a key differentiator in today’s workplace!
The past 25 years have been a period of enormous change – changing industries, changing ways of working, changing ways of learning and a transition to a knowledge-based economy. Did you know that the top 10 in-demand jobs in 2012 did not exist in 2004?This means that we are currently preparing individuals for jobs that do not exist yet. This change has been fuelled primarily by major breakthroughs in technology that led to better, faster, easier ways of doing things and open access to global information and communication. Yet, the future will continue to bring more changes at an even faster rate of development than we have experienced in the past few years. Knowledge and many skills are becoming obsolete at an unprecedented speed.
What does all this mean to the schools and workplaces? The constant scientific and technological innovation and change has a profound impact on the learning needs of both schools and workplaces that requires us to learn something new each day to keep schools and workplaces abreast of developments. The challenge for all of us is to keep pace with this change! To succeed in doing this, we need to be in pursuit of life-long learning and to continue building our knowledge and skills all throughout our careers. It also means finding a new approach to education and training that falls within the framework of continuous learning. Learning can no longer be divided into a place and time to acquire knowledge (school) and a place and time to apply the acquired knowledge (the workplace). It has to be authentic, reciprocal, simultaneousand corresponding to the emerging needs. Hence, the importance of continuous Professional Development! The concept underlyingcontinuous professional development is the idea that every individual has untapped potential, and requires limitless resources. Professional development is a process of continually progressing and refining one’s character and qualities as a parent, a teacher, a secretary, a doctor, a lawyer- as whatever or whoever one is. It is about lifelong learning and growing as an individual.
